Stomach Band is the implanted medical device that is used during a Laparoscopic Gastric Band Surgery or a mini Gastric Bypass to reduce the size of the stomach, leading to less huger and less intake of food which in turn leads to weight loss. The band is usually a sophisticated piece that allows the surgeon to tighten or loosen it depending on how much weight the patient is loosing. In some cases it can be inflated to further cut down the size of the stomach that is available to process food.
It is inserted by a laparoscopic procedure thus minimizing the actual need to cut the stomach wall Gastric Banding or Laparoscopic Gastric Band is the only weight loss procedure that is approved by the USA Food and Drug Administration.
The lap band is usually made of silicon and looks like a ring. It is placed around the upper part of the stomach to cut it out from the lower part so that only the smaller pouch thus created remains active. The lap band is filled with saline on its inner surface. This band cuts down the size of stomach and controls the stomach outlet as well.
During the actual lap band surgery some very small incisions are made and equipment inserted inside the stomach through them. There is a tiny camera that is put inside through one of the incisions, the surgeons watch their work on a monitor through this while the procedure is on. The stomach band is guided by the surgeons and tied around the stomach much like a wrist watch, then it is secured by the use of a ring.
Another part of the implanted medical device called the stomach band is the port. This is fixed beneath the skin of the abdomen. The access port helps the surgeon to increase and decrease the size of the stomach band by monitoring the quantity of saline or salt water inside into the inner balloon. The stomach size is totally dependant on how tight or loose the stomach band is therefore the access port is an extremely important part of this device. In this way even the diameter of the band can be expanded or contracted depending on need. This feature of the stomach band is extremely useful to pregnant women.
According to WHO 1.7 billion people are obese in this world. This statistics indicated that it might well be on its way to becoming an epidemic.
